DC region upgraded to Code Red air alert for Friday as wildfire smoke moves in
The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has upgraded the D.C. region—including Fairfax and Arlington counties—to a Code Red Air Quality Alert for Friday, July 17, due to an approaching plume of thick smoke from Canadian and Minnesota wildfires. This follows a Thursday defined by a Code Orange alert and a Heat Advisory.
Because Code Red conditions mean the air is unhealthy for everyone, health officials advise residents to limit outdoor activities, keep home and vehicle windows closed and ensure respiratory aids like inhalers are readily accessible.
